Round One: Let the Games Begin!
The Round One Prompt went up last night, as most of you who stay up later than I do probably already know! Pardon me as I just copy and paste the entire thing here.

Hey shippers!
We are so incredibly excited to announce the first main round prompt and the official start of the HSO!
This year, we’re loosely theming the prompts around patron trolls. We’re also trying to give you a little more creative space with this year’s prompts, so we’ll see how this works out!
And as always, if you are unsure whether something counts or not, just ask! You can reach us at homestuck.shipping@gmail.com
All submissions must be created/assembled new for this round by members of your team.
No fan-created content is allowed that has not been made by members of your team specifically in response to the prompt. Mainstream creative content is fine (e.g. popular music, well-known art pieces, the Homestuck soundtrack), but not fanart, fan music, etc. This is largely to ensure that the original content in your entry is clearly identifiable as distinct from the borrowed content.
This challenge will run until 11:59PM EDT June 23. If your Palhoncho sends it in after that time according to the gmail timestamp, your team’s submission will get posted--but we cannot guarantee that it will be posted in a timely manner.
Requirements (as stated in the Info Post)
Fic/meta must be between 800-3000 words.
Combination fic/art entries cannot have more than 4 images.
All other image-based media (including comics) cannot exceed 10 images/panels.
Cosplay must be at least 75% created or assembled new for the challenge.
The penalties for going over 3k words will be as follows:
3000-3050: no penalty (to allow for disparities in wordcount software)
3051-3150: -30 points
3151-3250: -60 points
etc.
PLEASE NOTE that gdocs is notoriously bad at generating an accurate wordcount, so you should probably check your submission at http://www.wordcounter.net/ just to make sure.
Also, this year we are requiring transcriptions of all text on images. These transcriptions count towards the wordcount.
Please remember not to post your HSO creations publicly until voting ends, whether or not they are chosen as part of the team submission. We would like to keep things as anonymous as possible!
Submission Format
We’re still working out the details, but this year we’re probably going to ask palhonchos to post their entries directly to the round comm! Stay tuned for more details.
Questions about this challenge should be emailed to homestuck.shipping@gmail.com; we will attempt to check the comments on this post, but we cannot guarantee that we will be able to see all of them.
Please remember to check the Info Post and FAQ to see if your question is answered there!
Remember: collaboration is not required for this round, but it is encouraged, so if you've got a great idea but need a helping hand, get right on up here and ask!
GET EXCITED, GUYS, THIS IS GONNA ROCK!
ROUND ONE: GAMBLING

For Round One, incorporate gambling--literal or metaphorical--in your submission. It doesn't need to be the central focus, but it should be a major theme.

So what's the story???? o 0 o ) /
Is it gonna be a fic+illustrations+song or...?
My previous team did that last year for round 3 in HSO haha. It is possible :>

I really like the idea of Dave as a liquor smuggler -- a brothers-owned business, Dave learning the ropes from his older Bro -- going into Canada and sneaking it back to high class joints around the...wherever. With some sort of high tech element, of course...and then Jade is the head of one of those high class joints, does a mean deal with the Strider brothers, particularly with the younger one
if you catch my drift etc etc
Steampunk typically tends towards the Victorian, in which case it would be more of a dreary Britain just before world war I (or during the war, I suppose) -- I can see it as a gearhead, earth-bound gang with an interest in learning the secrets of stopping time feeling threatened by the animalmechas, people who splice themselves with animal genes to give themselves superhuman powers. And either Jade's caught trying to smuggle the Time secret out of the fortress and gets hurt, or Dave is infiltrating the airbase and ends up trapped...
either one, I like them both. I'll probably end up doing something for one of them, at least.

it would be quite the stretch, to put it simply!
MY VOTE GOES TO 20STUCK, IN WHICH JADE IS A BARKEEPER, AND THE STRIDERS RUN THE JOINT.

how many people do we want to work with? a few for art, a few for the fic? or do we want like...a fic/art/cosplay blend? i think it would be really interesting if we could include a silent film or something crazy like that to be true to the time period, but that would be hard to do....
well, not THAT hard
but time consuming!!

was silent
film
SOMEONE GET A MOD CHECK ON THAT I BEG OF THEE

The concept right there is lovely, not the most original but definitely amazing if executed right. I'd read it instantly given the summary.
I am definitely okay with cosplay (I'm unfamiliar with cosplay and I don't know how to fit it in so you should handle that :P). But the cosplay you're doing is for 20stuck or the steampunk one? Oh and... don't you have to prepare props for cosplay, can you make it on time? :0

I think I prefer the jade as a bartender, dave as the owner of the joint version, but then again that's also not the most original thing ever.
no subject
That is true, but not many things are original nowadays...
20stuck seems to be what it will be for this round! But I was saying to consider the steampunk one to be used for the collab round if everyone is okay with it. If not, then we'll do something else!
Heeee good luck looking for vintage stuff! I love them but they are sooo expensive it's really stupid :(
