Round One: Let the Games Begin!

The Round One Prompt went up last night, as most of you who stay up later than I do probably already know! Pardon me as I just copy and paste the entire thing here.

ROUND ONE: GAMBLING

they call you lady luck

Hey shippers! 
We are so incredibly excited to announce the first main round prompt and the official start of the HSO!
This year, we’re loosely theming the prompts around patron trolls. We’re also trying to give you a little more creative space with this year’s prompts, so we’ll see how this works out!

For Round One, incorporate gambling--literal or metaphorical--in your submission. It doesn't need to be the central focus, but it should be a major theme.

All submissions must be created/assembled new for this round by members of your team.
No fan-created content is allowed that has not been made by members of your team specifically in response to the prompt. Mainstream creative content is fine (e.g. popular music, well-known art pieces, the Homestuck soundtrack), but not fanart, fan music, etc. This is largely to ensure that the original content in your entry is clearly identifiable as distinct from the borrowed content.

This challenge will run until 11:59PM EDT June 23. If your Palhoncho sends it in after that time according to the gmail timestamp, your team’s submission will get posted--but we cannot guarantee that it will be posted in a timely manner. 

Requirements (as stated in the Info Post)
Fic/meta must be between 800-3000 words.
Combination fic/art entries cannot have more than 4 images.
All other image-based media (including comics) cannot exceed 10 images/panels.
Cosplay must be at least 75% created or assembled new for the challenge.
The penalties for going over 3k words will be as follows:
3000-3050: no penalty (to allow for disparities in wordcount software)
3051-3150: -30 points
3151-3250: -60 points
etc.
PLEASE NOTE that gdocs is notoriously bad at generating an accurate wordcount, so you should probably check your submission at http://www.wordcounter.net/ just to make sure.
Also, this year we are requiring transcriptions of all text on images. These transcriptions count towards the wordcount.

Please remember not to post your HSO creations publicly until voting ends, whether or not they are chosen as part of the team submission. We would like to keep things as anonymous as possible!

Submission Format
We’re still working out the details, but this year we’re probably going to ask palhonchos to post their entries directly to the round comm! Stay tuned for more details.

i've been sitting here for like fifteen minutes trying to come up with ideas for this round but i can't, this song is on repeat in my head

maybe that means a remix is in order

Ahhh, this is incredibly exciting! I have a couple of ideas for the round, if I could share them???

* remix Luck is a Lady, or Lovegame by Lady Gaga. It sounds stupid in theory, but I have a concept that can turn the vapid pop song into grueling sadstuck territory.
* 20stuck AU? Gambling, and prohibition?
* actual canon in which we explore more of the mission behind Echidna's quest, and what Jade had to do to get the Quills???
* this is stupid I'm sorry aghgjg

Hm okay, I have a few ideas....primarily along the steampunk/dystopian AU line, probably something with Dave and Jade as heads of rival gangs, or something elemental -- fire vs. earth.

anyway the figurative definition of gambling (so says my dictionary) is: "take risky action in the hope of a desired result" so I'd probably do something more along those lines...

I'm pretty empty on ideas so I'll contribute some artwork for whichever idea you guys decide to go with? o p o
Most of you seem to take gambling in a metaphorical sense so I think if we go sadstuck for this, there's more things to explore.

Oh man oh man I'm with Kaf on this one. It seems you guys have some pretty cool fic ideas, and I have a MAJOR fashion boner for 20's period clothing and good Steampunk stuff so I would be thrilled to illustrate a story featuring either! ; u;

I also think the 20's-themed AU idea sounds fun! And ooaahhh Steampunk * u * I like all of these ideas aaahh.

I'm also sort of dry on the idea end, but what my mind kept going to when the prompt was revealed was something sad?? iiidk haha I'm a sucker for sadstuck~

And like a few others have already mentioned, I would also be honored to contribute any art because I think it all sounds really fun aahh

Just reiterating what other people said: 20's themed AU! Yes! I just imagine Dave as a gangster and Jade as a barkeeper and ahhhhh

I'm up for any of these ideas! My favourite is the 20's AU and the Steampunk AU. I am also out of ideas with this and I'll be more than happy to draw something if it is needed!

considering we're all leaning towards 20stuck

how do we want to go and do it? aaron and i both really want to write/cosplay it, and there are other talented artists/writers on the team! do we want a couple of people to write it, others to edit edit and make it gorgeous, and the rest to art for it?

Alright, seeing as we're pretty settled on the 20's AU idea, I went ahead and did some sketches for inspiration! Most of them look like butts (especially all the ones involving Dave because I don't have neary as much practice as I should drawing men) because they were drawn at roughly 3 AM... but you know...

One!
Two!
Three!
Four!
And five!

I had a lot of fun with Jade's outfits. The flapper look is one of my personal favorites~ I tried to keep everything as historically accurate as possible. Round/oval shades were the only style of sunglasses they wore, apparently, and they look kinda silly on Dave IMO > w>; But what can you do...
But yeah. Assuming this is the route we end up taking I am very very excited!! :D

I was thinking we should probably all get together sometime this weekend and start storyboarding -- there will be things we definitely need to decide on, like...20stuck is great, but what is the gamble? Currently I'm not reading much of a 'gambling' motif in any of this, so we'll have to figure something out, a way to make it explicitly clear. What's a good day/time for everyone?

Also we'll have to plan a story! So that people can start working on it. I assume that maybe we could either go 5 + 5 or 6 + 4 on the drawing/cosplay ratio? Since we can only have 10 images....

Also I checked on the silent film thing, and the mods ruled at 1min maximum for films. Apparently last year's HSO turned into a "you can only win if you make things move" competition, and that's not what they want to happen this year.

I understand we'll be going with 20stuck and there will be fic and cosplay.
And I was not in the team chat because this weekend was bad for me so...
Well if you guys don't need me to do anything, please let me know because my college schedule+ assignments are heavy, there's no such thing as summer break here...
